The Glong Yaao is a single face drum covered with stretched skin or leather. The instrument is played in a group of many drums at the same time. The body of the Glong Yaao is long with a wide head tapering down to the lower part which has a cylindrical shape and is flared open at the end like a trumpet. The body of the drum is usually decorated with colorful pleated cloth with a rope to sling across the shoulder with the face of the drum in front of the player’s body. The sap of the lacquer tree is applied to the face of the drum and a knob of kneaded mixture of cooked rice and ash is fixed onto the face of the drum to weight the skin cover so that the drum can produce the resonant sound.
At present the Glong Yaao is widely used in every region of Thailand. It is popularly played with other percussive instruments as well as western wind instruments to lead the processions such as the procession in the Buddhist monk ordination ceremony and the procession in the Gathin ceremony (a Buddhist ceremony to present robes to monks). Sometimes this kind of processional ensemble is collectively called the Therd Terng ensemble.
