The Grong is a rhythmic percussive instrument. It is usually played in accompaniment with the open-air Khon and the Lakorn performances, as well as the Mae Si dance, which is usually performed during the Thai traditional festivals, but is now rarely performed.
The Grong is made of a tube of bamboo of the desired length. A long slit is made along the whole length of the tube in order to make the sound not too dense. Both ends of the tube are supported with stands (Tao) made of hard wood or bamboo. The stands are used for convenience while playing and they help the instrument to produce the resonant sound.
To play the Grong, the player uses sticks made of pieces of dry bamboo or hard wood that are smoothly whittled and trimmed, to beat the bamboo tube with either one or both hands.
