The Pii Luk Kaen or Pii Poo Tai is a wind instrument of the Poo Tai people. It is a mixture of the Klui and the Kaen. The pipe of the Pii is made of a species of bamboo called Maai Hia (ไม้เฮี้ย) or Maai Goo Kaen, the same material used to make the Kaen. Because of this, some people call this instrument “Pii Luk Kaen”.
To make the Pii Luk Kaen, the Maai Hia is cut in the length of a section of bamboo, retaining one joint at the upper end, and cutting the joint out to make an opening at the lower end.
On the upper part of the pipe near the bamboo joint is pierced with a rectangular hole for inserting a reed made of a thin bamboo membrane, which has now been changed to metal such as brass, copper or silver. Then 5 finger holes are pierced and on the top a special hole is pierced and covered with bamboo membrane. This hole is called “Roo Yeua” (membrane hole). It is used for making the musical sound beautifully vibrated.
The Pii Luk Kaen is usually played in accompaniment with other instruments such as the Pin, the Kaen and the Saw. It is also harmoniously played in an ensemble to accompany the Poo Tai dance and the Fon Poo Tai.
