The Saw Bang or Saw Poo Tai is a string instrument made of a section of bamboo functioning as both the sound box and the neck of the Saw (Kan Saw), which is different from the Saw of other regions.
The Saw Bang is made of a species of bamboo growing on the mountains when it is budding. It is called “Maai Gu”. The bamboo is sun-dried until it is firm. Then it is peeled and pierced to insert the strings to fix with the tuning pegs. The bamboo tube functions as the sound box, in the same way as the sound box of the Saw. On one side of the tube a small piece of wood called Yong is placed to support the 2 strings which are made of wires used for the bicycle brake. One string is called “Sai Lai Siang”, functioning to play the main melody. The other string is called “Sai Glom Siang”, functioning to play the accompanying higher sound. The 2 strings are lined over the Yong to the tuning pegs, made of small pieces of wood, fixed at the other end of the tube. At the lower position there is a Rad-ok made of rattan strips tying the strings in order to touch the bamboo tube.
The Saw Bang produces musical sounds by drawing the bow across the strings. It is usually played with other instruments such as Kaen and Pii. It produces unique sweet sounds.
