The Khim Lek or Khim Paen or Khim Nong is a percussive instrument having similar pitch arrangements to that of the Khim Jed-yong, but metal slats are used instead of strings. Thus the sound it produces is different from the string Khim. Its sound is similar to that of the Kong Wong (a circle of gongs) in the Pii Pat ensemble, but is higher and softer.
The Khim Lek looks similar to the Khim Gra pao (the Khim in a carrying bag). The body and the lid are covered with hard material. There is a key for locking and slots for keeping the sticks, but there is no tuning mechanism because the pitches will not deviate since the metal slats have been made to produce the accurate pitches. Another significant difference between the Khim Lek and the string Khim is that the Khim Lek has 8 metal slats lined up equally, while the stringed Khim has more strings lined up in an overlapping manner.
The sticks of the Khim Lek are made of very mature and strong bamboo rods. A rubber ball is fixed to the head of each stick in order to produce the soft sound.
